The nearest big trekking destination from Kathmandu is Langtang Valley. The culture has been preserved for thousands of years with magnificent landscape.
Less tourists visit this trek making it more adventurous. Apart from the spectacular scenery, a visit to the area is an opportunity to explore the lifestyle and culture of the Tamangs, whose craftsmanship, language, dress and houses bear their uniqueness. Langtang is also known for its many glaciers – of which there are more than 70 of varying sizes – and high altitude lakes that include Gosainkunda, Parvatikunda, Bhairavkunda and Dudhkunda. The forests in the region have temperate and sub-alpine vegetation. Wildlife includes migratory birds, deer, monkeys, tahr and pika.
The trek to Langtang valley starts at Syabru Besi which is about 8 hours drive from Kathmandu. Initially the trail ascends a fairly deep densely forested valley which opens up into a wide flower scattered alpine meadow which at times of the year is covered with flowers. The old settlements of Langtang and Kyangjin Gompa are here. Langtang valley trek will suit those with limited time, particularly those with an interest in nature due to the broad range of flora and fauna.

The trail crosses to the north bank and climbs steeply for a 30 minutes up through the Langtang gorge before the ascent eases and the valley widens out into an area of fir and rhododendron.
After passing through a few old Tibetan settlements, we eventually descend into the Langtang valley. The houses of Langtang and the neighboring communities have Tibetan-style flat roofs and are surrounded by stone walls enclosing fields of buckwheat, potatoes, wheat, turnips and barley. The villagers keep herds of yaks and horses to help with their daily life.
Kyanjin Gompa provides views of dramatic icefall flowing from Mt. Langtang Lirung (6781 m) and Mt. Kinshung. From Kyagjing on a clear day you can get good views of Mt. Dorje Lakpa, Yala Peak, Langshisha Ri (6427 m), Langtang Lirung (7725 m), Mt. Ganchenpo (6387 m) , Ganga La pass (5130 m) and Mt. Naya Kang (5844 m).

For people who fit more fit and are up for a longer walking day you can climb Kyangjing Ri peak ( 4,350 m) which is around an extra three hours of climb. Kyangjing Ri peak provides a much more spectacular view of the mountain peaks seen from Kyangjing.
From Lama Hotel, you retrace your route following the Langtang River to get to Syabrubensi. You have the option to stay in Syabru or drive back 7-8 hours to Kathmandu.
