Jiri Everest trek is the classic trekking route used by the early expeditions before Lukla airport was built. If you do not want to fly to Lukla and rather want to trek the original route, this trek is for you.  This route has been used by locals for centuries. Jiri Everest Base Camp Trek is a perfect combination of nature, culture and adventure.

As we walk along the trail, we pass through alpine forests and glacier rivers with the inspiring vistas of mountains in our backdrop. Your journey through this trail involves many ups and downs that are nerve shaking but the beautiful scenarios will inspire you to to keep moving. Visit to the monasteries on the way with the flag prayers throughout the trail will lift up your spirituality. A blend of interaction with rich culture of Sherpa people will let you know about their culture and lifestyle. Their warm hospitality will make you feel homely. This trek starts from Jiri and familiarises you to the entire Khumbu region from its base to the Tibetan highlands at the ape. This route provides the best acclimatization opportunity and the scenary of lush jungle when you fly straight to Lukla.

Driving from Kathmandu takes 6 hours to reach Jiri, a beautiful rainy town via bus and gives ample opportunities to enjoy the scenic beauty of pine forests, rivers, alpine lakes, emerald hills and terraces filled with golden rice and mustard plants.

This trek is physically demanding but certainly one of the best in the world. It is an opportunity to embark on the same heroic journey that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa took in 1953 to summit Mount Everest. Alternatively, you can fly to Lukla and do shorter Everest Base Camp trek.

Today’s goal is the principal community of this region: Namche Bazaar. Today’s trek follows along the Dudh Koshi River, crossing it several times over numerous suspension bridges. Today we enter Sagarmatha National Park and then up to a steep ascent to where we will see Mt. Everest above the Lhotse-Nupte ridge. After about 5 – 6 hours of trekking, we finally arrive at the main trading center of the region: Namche Bazaar.

Day 11

Acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar
This is a day to acclimatize to the higher elevation of 3,440m. Health officials advise the best way to acclimatize is to remain active. There will be a short day trek to Thame (3,493m) or Khunde (3,840m), or simply to relax and explore the community of Namche Bazaar. This is a great day to learn more about the Sherpa culture as well as visiting the local museums. Nearby there is also the highest Buddhist monastery in the world, which houses a scalp of a yeti. We will again spend the night in Namche Bazaar.

Day 12

Trek to Tengboche (3,870 m) 5 – 6 hours
Today is back to the trek to Base Camp. Along the way, you will enjoy fantastic views of the peaks of Everest (8,.848m), Nuptse (7,861m), Lhotse (8,516m), Ama Dablam (6,812m) as well as Thamserku (6,618m). The trail today is more gradual with opportunities to observe the wildlife of the forests of the high Himalayas. The last part of the trail does get steep for a short distance until we reach Tengboche. This village offers close-up views of a number of mountains, plus the largest Buddhist monastery in the Khumba region.

Day 13

Trek to Dingboche (4,360 m) 5 – 6 hours
The monastery at Tengboche is most impressive as the morning sunrise reflects off the mountains and illuminates this ancient edifice. Today’s journey goes for the upper trail which offers the best photographic views of the monastery. The trail will pass chhortens and Mani walls as it passes through small villages. After lunch, the trail is moderate as it enters the Imja Valley. We descend down to the Lobouche River and then finally climb a steep trail to Dingboche.

Day 14

Trek to Duglha (4,600 m) 3 – 4 hours
The day begins with a climb through the Khumba Khola Valley which features some astonishing views of the mountains. At Dusa, the valley begins to narrow and past Phulung Karpo, the camp site of the first successful climb of Mt. Everest (8,848m). The trail skirts Mt. Pumori (7,138) and passes Chola Lake. The trek ends 3 – 4 hours later at Duglha so we can further acclimatize.

Day 15

Trek to Lobuche (4,940 m) 4 hours
Today’s trek takes us across the Khumbu Glacier as we see several magnificent mountain peaks: Khumbutse (6,665m), Lingtren (6,749m), Pumori and Mahalangur Himal. We are near Mt. Everest, but it is now hidden from view by these other mountains. Today’s trek is 2 – 4 hours, intentionally kept short because of the higher elevation as we reach the village of Lobuche.

Day 16

Trek to Gorak Shep (5,170 m) – EBC (5,364 m)
Mt. Everest finally comes back in view today as you will see the north ridge while continuing the trek over the Khumbu Glacier and later the Changri Glacier where the latter offers a 360° view of the Himalayas. The trail continues to Everest Base Camp (5,364m). There is no place to stay at Everest Base Camp, so we return to Gorak Shep. Trekking time is 7 – 8 hours.

Day 17

Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,545 m) – Pheriche (4,280 m) 7 – 8 hours
Today we achieve our destination. We begin early for an inspiring view of sunrise over Mt. Everest (8,848m) as the morning rays hit the snowcapped peak. Mornings are cold (-10° to -14° C) with even colder winds. However, the view more than compensates for any discomfort from the cold winds off the snowcapped peaks. We will return to Gorak Shep for breakfast, and then begin our return trip. The trek down to Pheriche is a gradual descend where we spend the night.

Day 18

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m) 6 – 8 hours
The return trip is faster as we don’t have to stop and acclimatize. There will still be opportunities to get some additional views of Mt. Everest as we continue to descend to Namche Bazaar where we can get a hot shower and relax in the comforts of this major commercial center.

Day 19

Trek to Lukla (2,800 m) 7 hours
The trail downhill is steeper today as we descend to the city of Lukla This is our last day of trekking before we board the plane tomorrow for Kathmandu.

Day 20
