Dobato protected forest is located in Ilam in the foothill of the Himalayas. This place is a strong hold of Red pandas. This tour focuses on tracking Red pands in their natural habitat with expert guides. This area is also famous for special birds like Fire-tailed Myzornis, Maroon-backed Accentor, Rufous-throated Wren Babbler, Slender-billed, Scimitar Babbler, Rusty-fronted Barwing, Rufous-capped Babbler and eight species of laughing-thrush, to name a few. Other mammals in this place include Clouded Leopards, Leopard cats, Himalayan Palm Civets.
Our Red Panda quest begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, before driving through Ilam, Nepal’s tea capital and from there we head to Dobate, a tiny village in the easterFrom our base here we’ll explore the higher altitude forests (2,200-4,800m) looking for Red Pandas and other wildlife.

Day 1: Departure
You will be picked up from the airport by our company representative and transferred to the hotel in Thamel, the tourist city in Kathmandu. If you arrive in the morning, you will have plenty of time to explore the Kathmandu valley. All day guided site seeing in the vibrant and beautiful Kathmandu Valley – visiting Durbar squares, Stupas and Temples.
Late morning 45 minute domestic flight to Bhadrapur, with spectacular views of the Himalaya ranges including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kangchenjunga, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu. Then you will travel by road to Ilam and begin the journey north into the mountains, passing tea gardens and Nepali communities. We will spend overnight hotel stay in Ilam, overlooking tea gardens.
You will leave Ilam after breakfast and bird watch while traveling up the mountain by road (3:30 hours) and during a light hike (30 minutes) as we ascend higher into prime red panda habitat. You will arrive at Dobato in the late afternoon – the village closest to red panda habitat and our base for the next four nights. You can take light hike in the evening for community visit. You will spend overnight home stay at Dobato village (2200 m).
The next three days you will wake up early to begin tracking red pandas in the alpine temperate forests with RPN Forest Guardians. We will also likely see other mammal and bird species throughout the day. We will stop in local homes for lunch and hot refreshments and immerse ourselves in the community with fun tasks including traditional Nepali cooking lessons in the evenings. You will spend 3 nights home stays in Choyaatar.
Leave Dobato after having breakfast and track red pandas along the way. Lunch at Kalpokhari (3026 m) on the Nepal and India border in the afternoon with beautiful elevated views of the Mai River Valley. Hike up to the highest peak in the Singhalila range (3636 m), with breathtaking sunsets over Mt Kanchenjunga and Mt Everest. Overnight stay in a hotel at Sandakpur.
Rising in the early morning we make our way to vantage points for the panoramic view of the impressive Himalayas during sunrise. After breakfast and refreshing you will hike back down to Dobato for lunch, and then drive back to Ilam.
Our last day, departing Ilam after breakfast by road for the return journey back to Kathmandu. Group farewell dinner in the evening.
